Everyone. Relax one corner. The Hongkongers are returning to Singapore once again.
The unrest in Hong Kong has entered its second month.
It doesn’t seem like a conclusion is close. On the contrary, it looks like it will get much worse in the days ahead. Daily clashes between protesters and the police are daily features that worry many.
Hong Kong or Xiang Gang aka Fragrant Harbour is anything but rosy and fragrant now.
The objection to the proposed extradition bill has now been hijacked by the protestors for a much bigger prize ahead.
Hongkongers initially protested the right of the central government in Beijing to extradite Hong Kong nationals who commit a criminal offence in the mainland.
Independence from China? 😰
For the majority of Hongkongers, estimated at 80% of the population, they are totally at loss for words.
They did not ask or want this to happen. They look powerless and some are seriously looking at moving out.
Think pre-1997 all over again.
For the many commonalities between Hong Kong and Singapore, the red dot will always be an attractive destination to escape to.
What would be the impact if 100,000 (or more) HK families migrate over to SG?

Chendol News Asia Regional Correspondent Money Chan gives her views in brief:
- The price of Lim Chee Guan bak kwa will go up. Again. The Hongkongers simply love this particular brand.
- Job market will get even tougher for some locals
- Surge in new companies and businesses. Hongkongers are about the most enterprising in the world.
- The private housing market will receive a much needed boost. New property launches will find the opportunity very timely.
- The resale public housing may see a huge influx of interest. In rental interest and for PRs and new citizens, even the resale market too.
- Restaurants, especially those serving Cantonese fare, may experience a big boost in business. The age old rumour has always been about the best HK chefs migrating and converging in SG for the longest time.
- International schools will be swamped
- Tutors can now think about changing cars
- Taxis and PHVs have more reasons to smile
- Cantopop will make a comeback
- For new citizens, a few thousand votes for the incumbent?
- TVB in SG will see a few thousand new signups
- The noise level on the island will go up a few decibels. Boy, they can be pretty loud.
What else can you think of?
We wish that normal service resumes in Hong Kong and common sense will eventually prevail. Sooner rather than later.
In the meantime, prepare yourself for the massive influx ahead.
