For many, Hong Kong is an epitome of good food, great shopping, lovely weather and home to enterprising, weird English names and a very driven people.
If you have been following the developments in Hong Kong the past two months plus, you must be concerned too. That the Hong Kong that we all love and admire – is being threatened to the core.
It started out as a peaceful protest against a proposed extradition bill. Permitting Hong Kong offenders in China to be sent back to the mainland to face criminal proceedings. It has since manifested into a full scale protest (some call it a riot) to seek change.
In a hard hitting , gloves off exclusive interview with three student leaders of the Hong Kong Protest, Chendol News Asia Political Correspondent Berry Long reports.
The student leaders Apple Chew, Blue Cheng and Carmichael Kar (ABC in short) come face on with Berry Long in a very long interview.
BL : I pay a hefty monthly subscription to watch TVB serials. Not to watch never ending riots and obscenities hurled at mothers. Can we all have our old Hong Kong back?
A : We are solly but no choy. We must fight the extradition bill.
BL : The proposed extradition bill is dead. Why are you still rioting?
B : We have five other demands that the government must accede to. We are prepared to destroy HK for democracy.
BL : Can you hear yourself talking? Destroy Hong Kong?
C : Yes. Freedom comes with a price. I read it in Nelson Mandela’s book. Or was it Harry Porter?
BL : Do you know you are being called immature, rash, young dimwits influenced by western values? You are protesting carrying the American and British flags?
ABC : Yes. We hope that the Americans and Brits will intervene and fight China.
BL : You want gweilos to help you fight your fellow Chinese? You want to trigger World War 3?
A : We play computer war games, nothing will happen. Just press restart.
BL : Let’s be honest and cut all the crap. What is your actual goal? Secession from China? The birth of the Republic of Hong Kong?
B : Don’t tell anyone. You are right. We refuse to be part of a communist state. Besides, our Mandarin sucks. The world powers will help us.
C : We are patiently waiting for the People’s Liberation Army to move in. Then the real action will start.
BL : You are prepared to die for your cause?
A : Ermm..others may die. I will stay home and watch TVB dramas until it is safe to come out.
BL : Who is leading this revolution?
B : We have no leader. We just go with the flow.
BL : May God have mercy on Hong Kong. Thank you Apple, Blue and Carmichael for your time.
Meanwhile, the Hong Kong economy is tanking fast. The visitors have stopped coming. Sales have plunged. Companies will close and many will lose their livelihood.
Many Hongkongers are already packing and leaving for Singapore, Australia, Canada, USA and Malaysia..
